Can I use my Lock N Stitch pins with Terox taps?
No. Terox product is not compatible with the Lock N Stitch products.
The thread pitch is slightly different between the two companies; therefore, you would need to get all new taps and pins from the same company to work.
Is pinning a proven method?
Yes. The former Lock N Stitch pins was a proven repair method. Companies such as Caterpillar, Cummins, International, GM, Ford and even the US Government approved the pinning process as an acceptable repair method.
Terox produced product similar to what Lock N Stitch had created as it is made out of the same material and thread design is nearly the same. The only difference is the thread pitch.
What size pin should you use?
You should use a pin diameter relative to the thickness of the casting you are working with.
You want to make sure that the pin you use isn't too big that the head cannot be torqued off due to there not being a strong enough hold.
When should you not pin a block?
If you have a part of the engine that gets red hot such as turbo or exhaust manifold, pinning is not a good solution.
Could pins fail from heating and cooling of block?
No. Cast iron and steel are very similar in molecular structure. They will both expand and shrink similarly. If that wasn't the case your main caps and head bolts would become lose.
Why would you stitch over weld?
When you weld you have to heat up the entire block to several hundred degrees. While the block is at that temperature it can get distorted if it isn't on a perfectly flat fully supported area. After you weld at the high heat you have to take time to let the block cool down.
After welding a block, welds swell due to the high heat. Once that heat cools the welding can actually crack on the edge of the weld.
Block sitting is faster as you don't have to wait to heat or cool. It's a cold repair so you don't have distortion of the block. It can be stronger than a weld. You don't have cracking
